I don’t know about you, but when I heard about an event in Kuala Lumpur called the “Dream Car Expo”, I got pretty excited.
You can imagine my disappointment then to find that the “Dream Car Expo” at the MyTown Shopping Centre was actually a handful of trade stands and a collection of depressing and dreary family cars featured in the background of the pictures below.
There was, however, a pretty interesting R35 Nissan GTR sporting a full Liberty Walk Kit among some other not-so-subtle modifications, which proves the perfect gateway to get something off of my chest.
These may seem extreme to the untrained eye, but to the rest of us, these Liberty Walk kits are becoming just a little bit cookie-cutter. Although the wider-than-wide bodies were something a little bit special when they were released, more than half of the GTR’s I’ve seen in the past couple of months have sported the aggressive, bolt-on LBW look.
I think we’re at a point where the GTR has just been done one too many times and although there’s unrivalled aftermarket support to help tuners and builders, all of the builds tend to come out more or less the same, just in slightly different hues.
Any GTR is still special to see rolling on the street, but I feel we’re at the point where a Liberty Walk or Rocket Bunny kit is now a bit like wearing an edgy shirt on a night out – it was cool when few people were doing it, but for every group of lads tussling for drinks at the bar, half of them are sporting an interesting or “wavy” shirt.
The magic and the novelty has faded.
